My Experience of hiking to Chuwi’ Kortel Mirador, Lake Atitlan’s Newest Viewpoint

Say hello to the newest mirador in Lake Atitlan! Catch stunning views of the lake from above at Santa Cruz La Laguna's “Chuwi' Kortel Mirador”.

Hey there! I'm Lee Beal, founder of Kayak Guatemala. I've spent more than two decades here by this lake, and know these mountains like the back of my hand.

So when the Chuwi' Kortel Mirador opened up in Santa Cruz, I was incredibly excited to explore it. It's a rare scenario that a new viewpoint opens up at Lake Atitlan, especially one as mesmerizing as this!

In this blog, I'll tell you why about my experience of hiking Chuwi' Kortel Mirador for the first time and why it's already taking over everyone's travel bucket list.

At Kayak Guatemala, we also launched a new hiking tour to help tourists visit the mirador. We'll discuss how our new tour works and how you can plan a smooth, hassle-free visit.

What Is the Chuwi' Kortel Mirador?

View from Chuwi' Kortel Mirador

Chuwi’ Kortel Mirador is a mountain viewpoint above Santa Cruz La Laguna on Lake Atitlán, Guatemala. It overlooks the lake, the village below and the surrounding mountains and volcanoes. It is part of the Cerro Chwi Kortel, which is recognised as part of Santa Cruz La Laguna’s natural heritage.

Imagine a lake spreading out below with the three volcanoes of San Pedro, Atitlán, and Tolimán standing out in the background. Isn't it a beautiful scenario?

Interestingly, Chuwi Kortel has cultural significance too. The name, Chuwi' Kortel Mirador, means a place for guardians and comes from the native Maya language. It acts as a watchtower of Santa Cruz La Laguna.

Guatemala's Ministry of Culture lists both the hill and viewpoint as local natural heritage, while a traditional “Danza del Chuwi Kortel” is listed among Santa Cruz La Laguna's intangible cultural heritage.

Why This Is One of the Best Viewpoints Is Lake Atitlán

If I'm being honest, I've seen lots of viewpoints come and go here, but Chuwi' Kortel Mirador is one of the majestic viewpoints you don't want to miss. It is actually worthy of the hype it's already getting.

The timing here is pure magic. The warm light of sunrise and sunset falls in such a way that the whole view resembles a gold mine. Plus, the whole way, the route up is not artificially made, so it gives you a feel of actual hiking.

The platform itself is made of spiral wood. So you can enjoy a full 360-degree view. Plus, the winding trail to the peak is so scenic that the hike itself feels like a reward.

Standing up there, I myself agree that it's one of the best miradors in Lake Atitlán.

Hiking up to Chuwi' Kortel for the first time

What made the hike/viewpoint particularly interesting to me was that it’s not simply a roadside viewpoint. You hike up through the valley from Santa Cruz to reach it. We spent between 2-3 hours doing the whole hike. It has quite steep sections, so it’s more of a proper morning hike than a casual walk.

With Kayak Guatemala, we started the hike in Santa Cruz La Laguna, then climb through a traditional Kaqchikel community, coffee farms, oak forests, and volcanic mountain landscapes before reaching a breathtaking panoramic overlook high above the lake.

Be prepared for a workout! The hike is steep, with sustained inclines for much of the way, and some of our group said it was more challenging than they expected. We took our time, brought plenty of water and wore shoes with good grip.

Chuwi’ Kortel Hiking FAQs

How difficult is the hike to Chuwi’ Kortel?

The hike is challenging, primarily because of its steep and sustained ascent. One visitor who completed the sunrise hike described the inclines as steep for essentially the entire way. You don't need to be an experienced mountaineer, but a reasonable level of fitness will make the experience much more enjoyable.

How long does the Chuwi’ Kortel hike take?

Allow several hours for the overall experience, including the climb, time to enjoy the viewpoint and the descent. Your exact hiking time will depend on your pace and how often you stop along the way.

When is the best time to hike Chuwi’ Kortel?

Early morning is a great option. You'll avoid hiking uphill during the hottest part of the day and, with an early enough start, can experience sunrise from the mountain. Sunrise hikes are offered by local community guides.

Do I need a guide to hike Chuwi’ Kortel?

We recommend hiking with a local guide, particularly if you're visiting for the first time or setting out before sunrise. Aside from making navigation easier, going with a local guide can add much more context to the experience. Community-led tours in Santa Cruz combine the hike with opportunities to learn about the village and its people.

What should I bring?

Wear comfortable hiking shoes with good grip and bring plenty of water. For a sunrise hike, pack a headtorch or flashlight and a light layer for the cooler early-morning temperatures. Sun protection is also worth carrying for the journey back down.

Can I hike Chuwi’ Kortel for sunrise?

Yes. Sunrise is one of the most memorable times to visit, and locally guided sunrise hikes are available from Santa Cruz La Laguna. Just remember that you'll begin the climb in darkness, so suitable lighting and a guide are particularly useful.

Is Chuwi’ Kortel worth the hike?

If you're comfortable with a steep climb, absolutely. The viewpoint is beautiful, but much of the appeal comes from the experience of getting there. It's a chance to get above Santa Cruz, spend a few hours in the surrounding landscape and experience Lake Atitlán away from its busier tourist spots.
