Guatemala is a country of striking contrasts. Towering volcanoes, lush rainforests, and ancient Maya ruins create an epic backdrop for adventure, while charming colonial towns and deep-rooted indigenous traditions provide a rich cultural experience. If you're looking for a travel experience that blends action and authenticity, this 10-day itinerary is for you.
Many travelers enter Guatemala through La Aurora International Airport in Guatemala City, but the real magic lies beyond the capital. This itinerary is designed to maximize your time, balancing adventure, nature, and cultural immersion without overloading your schedule. Over the next ten days, you’ll explore the cobbled streets of Antigua, trek to volcanic summits, kayak across the jewel-like waters of Lake Atitlán, and connect with the vibrant Maya culture.
As a long-time resident of Lake Atitlán and the owner of Kayak Guatemala, I've spent over 20 years guiding travelers to the most unforgettable experiences in the region. This itinerary highlights the best of Guatemala's highlands, making it ideal for travelers with roundtrip flights in and out of Guatemala City who want to explore two key locations rather than bouncing from place to place.
The most accessible airport in Guatemala is La Aurora International Airport (GUA) in Guatemala City. From here, it's a one-hour drive to Antigua, a charming colonial town with breathtaking volcano views. If you're in Guatemala for a short time, we don’t recommend staying in Guatemala City—you’ll have a far better experience in Antigua.
After checking in, take an evening stroll through Antigua’s cobblestone streets, where glowing lanterns illuminate 17th-century buildings. Unwind with dinner and a drink at one of our favorite restaurants:
Antigua is a city steeped in history. Once the capital of Spanish Central America, it is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Spend the day discovering its most fascinating sites.
For adventure seekers, the Acatenango overnight trek is an absolute must. This non-technical but challenging hike takes you to an elevation of 3,976 meters (13,045 feet).

Lake Atitlán is considered one of the most beautiful lakes in the world, and once you arrive, you’ll see why. The deep blue waters are surrounded by three towering volcanoes, and its shoreline is dotted with small Maya villages, each offering a unique experience. This is where Guatemala’s natural beauty meets vibrant indigenous culture.
While Antigua showcases Guatemala’s colonial past, Lake Atitlán provides an entirely different experience—a fusion of adventure, tranquility, and culture. Here, you’ll have the chance to explore hidden coves by kayak, hike volcanoes, and visit traditional weaving cooperatives. If you want a trip that blends relaxation with activity, Atitlán is the perfect place to balance it all.
San Juan La Laguna is often called the “Swiss village” of Lake Atitlán due to its pristine streets, thriving arts scene, and commitment to sustainability. This lakeside town is home to talented artists and weavers who have preserved Maya traditions through vibrant murals, textiles, and handcrafted goods. Visiting San Juan offers a deep cultural experience that highlights the resilience and creativity of the local community.

Chichicastenango Market is a bustling hub of Maya culture, offering a sensory mix of vibrant colors, aromatic incense, and the lively hum of vendors. One of the largest indigenous markets in Central America, it's the perfect place to browse handwoven textiles, carved wooden masks, and intricate beadwork while experiencing a slice of daily life in the highlands. The market is more than just a place to shop—it’s a cultural experience. Visit Santo Tomás Church, where shamans blend Catholic and Maya rituals on the steps, and explore the colorful cemetery, where each tomb represents a different energy in the Maya calendar. If you’re lucky, you may even catch a traditional dance performance, with masked performers reenacting ancient stories.
After a day of cultural immersion, return to Lake Atitlán and unwind in San Pedro La Laguna, the lake’s nightlife hub. This lively town offers laid-back bars, live music, and a social backpacker scene. Some top spots include Sublime for reggae nights, Bar Alegre for rooftop cocktails, and El Barrio, a multi-bar venue with a little something for everyone. For a more local experience, grab a drink at a small cantina near the town square, where you can sip Guatemalan rum and ice-cold beers while chatting with friendly locals. If you prefer a quieter evening, head to San Marcos La Laguna for yoga, sound healing, or stargazing by the lake.
